AppleTalk Abatement Step-by-Step for Mac OS 7.6.1-9.2.2

To connect to a laser printer via LPR

  1. If you are running Mac OS 8.5.2 through 9.2.2, skip to Step 2.
    If you are running Mac OS 7.6.1 through 8.5.1, download and install the LaserWriter 8.6 driver from Apple (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58307).
  2. Open the "Desktop Printer Utility" application on your computer. This is likely in the "Utilities" folder within the "Applications" folder on your hard drive:

  3. Click once on the "Printer (LPR)" line in the dialog box that appears, then click "OK":

  4. Click the "Change..." button in the "PostScript Printer Description (PPD) File" section of the window that appears:

  5. Select the model of the printer you are connecting to from the list that appears and click "Select". If you do not see the printer model, click the "Generic" button:

  6. Click the "Change..." button in the "LPR Printer Selection" section of the window that appears:

  7. Enter the address of the server you want to connect to (in this example evans-297.berkeley.edu), click "Verify", then click "OK":

  8. Click the "Create..." button in the window that appears:

  9. Give the printer a name that will help you remember which printer it is and click "Save":

  10. You're done! The printer you just connected to will be available from the "Printer" pop-up dialog box whenever you choose "Print" in an application.

To connect to a file server via TCP/IP

  1. If you are running Mac OS 8.5.2 through 9.2.2, skip to Step 2.
    If you are running Mac OS 7.6.1 through 8.5.1, download and install the AppleShare Client 3.8.3 software from Apple (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58360).

  2. Select "Chooser" from the Apple Menu:

  3. Click on "AppleShare", then click on the "Server IP Address..." button that appears. You will see the following dialog box:

  4. Enter the address of the server you want to connect to (in this example derelict.berkeley.edu) and click "connect":

  5. Enter your username and password for the server and click "connect":

  6. Select the items you wish to use on the server and click "OK". To select multiple volumes, command-click on the items you want to select. To have the items appear each time you start your computer, click in the checkbox next to the item name: Picture 8.gif

  7. You're done! The items you have selected will appear as icons on your desktop. To make connecting easier in the future, you can make aliases of those items—double-clicking on the alias will re-connect to the server without having to go through this process.
