IPX/AppleTalk abatement information

CNS discontinued support for IPX and AppleTalk routing on September 30, 2002

During the ensuing months, members of Network Services coordinated with Departmental IT contacts to schedule the planned abatement of IPX and AppleTalk configurations from routers across campus and at remote sites.

The last remaining configurations enabling the transport of these protocols were removed from campus core routers on May 27, 2003.

What other campuses are doing

• Stanford University will be discontinuing Appletalk routing in September 2003. They have an excellent website that includes information on IP printing and file server access for Macintoshes. Stanford does not route IPX at all.
• UC Santa Cruz retired Appletalk in January 2002. (UCSC never routed IPX.) Their abatement web page has information on the types of services affected by the cessation of Appletalk routing and other information.
• Cornell retired Appletalk in July 1999. Their Appletalk abatemtent page discusses this retirement.
• The University of Oregon shut off both Appletalk and IPX routing on July 01, 2002. Here is the article in their IT newsletter discussing the phase-out.
• The University of Washington does not route IPX or AppleTalk.
• Northwestern University discontinued routing AppleTalk in February 2002. Their website offers a number of useful links, including security recommendations for sharing files, and tips for users as well as System Administrators.
• Penn State discontinued AppleTalk routing on July 01, 2002. Here is a link to their announcement.
• The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center stopped supporting the Macintosh platform altogether, and thus stopped routing AppleTalk on October 01, 2001.
• Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory discontinued routing AppleTalk in October 2001. Here is a description of the phases of their project.
• The University of Pennsylvania discontinued routing AppleTalk in September 2002. Their abatement website outlines their planned schedule and offers a slide presentation of the project.
