Newsgroups Available at UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley news servers carry all of the traditional "big eight" newsgroups described below. Select groups from the alt.* hierarchy as well as other hierarchies outside of the big eight are carried as well.

If you simply would like to see a pre-existing alt.* or a group in a different non big eight hierarchy carried by UC Berkeley news servers, send email to usenet@agate.berkeley.edu with the full group name and a short description of the group (for the newsgroups file). Requests to add groups are almost always honored (except in the rare case that the group is known to be bogus).

Traditional Top Level Usenet Groups

These groups are distributed worldwide and are divided into eight broad classifications: humanities, news, soc, talk, misc, sci, comp and rec. Each of these classifications is organized into groups and subgroups according to topic.

comp
Topics of interest to both computer professionals and hobbyists, including topics in computer science, software source, and information on hardware and software systems.
humanities
Topics about the humanities.
misc
Groups addressing themes not easily classified under any of the other headings or that incorporate themes from multiple categories.
news
Groups concerned with the news network and software themselves.
rec
Groups oriented towards hobbies and recreational activities.
sci
Discussions intended as technical in nature and relating to the established sciences.
soc
Groups primarily addressing social issues and socializing.
talk
Groups largely debate-oriented and tending to feature long discussions without resolution and without appreciable amounts of generally useful information.
Information on these groups is posted once a month to news.lists, news.groups, and news.announce.newusers, under the subject "List of Active Newsgroups".
