MacOS Guide for Off-Campus Usenet Access
The information provided on this page is only a guide; it is not a
complete support reference. CNS does not have the resources to provide
support for configuration and use of client software.
The following MacOS clients are known to work with AUS. If the client you
wish to use is not listed below, please see General tips on connecting to AUS for pointers
on getting your software to work. After you have completed the
instructions below, your client will be ready to connect to the
AUS. Information on the use of your client is outside the scope of
this document. Please consult your software's manual and/or online help
system for further documentation.

- If you have not already launched the Netscape Communicator application, launch it.
- Under the Tasks menu, select Mail & Newsgroups
- Under the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
- Click on the button titled New Account.
- In the dialogue box that appears, click on the radio button for Newsgroup Account, then click the Next button.
- Enter the information requested, then click the Next button.
- Enter the news server name "authnews.berkeley.edu", then click the Next button.
- This next section allows you to change the name of your news account. You may change you account name to whatever you wish. Once you are finished, click the Next button.
- Please check to make sure that all of the information you have entered is correct (use the Back button to make changes). If the information is correct, click the Finish button.
- The account you just created should appear in the list on the left
of the Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings window. Under this
account, click on Server Settings
- Check the box next to Use secure connection (SSL)
- Click OK
- If you have not already launched the Netscape Communicator application, launch it.
- Under the Edit menu, select preferences
- Click on the arrow to the left of Mail & Newsgroups so that the
sub-categories (which are indented to the right) appear.
- Click on the item News Servers
- Click the Add button
- In the dialogue box that will appear, type in the address:
authnews.berkeley.edu
- Check the box labeled Support encrypted connections
- Click OK
- Click OK
- If you have not already launched the Outlook Express application,
launch it.
- Under the Tools menu, select Accounts
- Click on the New button and select News... (You will need
to hold down the mouse button when you click)
- In the dialogue box that appears, select the email account you
would like to be included with your posts, then click the right arrow button.>
- Enter the news server name "authnews.berkeley.edu" and enable the
check-box "My news server requires me to log on", then click
the right arrow button.
- The next section asks that you enter your Account ID and password.
Enter your CalNet ID and passphrase, then click theright arrow button.
- The last section asks you to name your account. Enter in a name
that will help you to identify this account (for example: remote UCB
news).
- Please check to make sure that all of the information you have
entered is correct (use the left-arrow button to do this). If the information is correct, click the Finish button.
- The account you just created should appear in the list of the
Internet Account window. Click on the account, and then click the
Edit button.
- Click on the tab titled Account Settings
- Check the text Click here for advanced receiving options.
- Check the box next to This server requires a secure connection
(SSL).
- Click on the small square in the upper left corner to close the window.
- Click OK
- Close the Accounts window.
