Authenticated Usenet Service The Authenticated Usenet Service (AUS) allows students, faculty, and staff of the University of California, Berkeley to read and post usenet articles from any computer connected to the Internet. This web site provides information on the AUS and documentation on configuring your computer to use it. Note: CalNet passphrases which contain one or more spaces will not work with the AUS. If you would like to use the AUS and your passphrase contains a space, you might consider changing your passphrase by replacing any spaces with other characters. More information about this limitation may be found in the FAQ. The AUS is currently in a pilot testing phase. The service may be unstable or unavailable while troubleshooting or repair work is performed. Any outages will be announced in advance where possible on the following page:
The AUS allows you to access the usenet using client software running on your computer. Multiple clients which work with the AUS are available for all the common operating systems (MacOS, Un*x, Windows). Each time you use the service, you will be asked to authenticate yourself using your CalNet ID and passphrase. The AUS encrypts all communication between your client and the AUS server to ensure that your CalNet ID and passphrase are secure.
Setting up your computerIn the pages listed below, instructions for configuring various client software for a specific operating system are given. If you are using a different operating system, or if the client you wish to use is not listed in the above pages, please see General tips on connecting to the AUS for pointers on getting your software to work.
AUS FAQ: questions and troubleshootingIf you are having trouble with connecting to the AUS, or if you receive an error message while connecting, please consult the AUS FAQ.Please see the Computer Use Policy website for policy information and guidelines on appropriate use of computer resources, including Usenet services.
