Faculty Modem Service

The Berkeley campus Faculty Modem Service was created in order to provide a no-cost, reliably available path for faculty to make use of campus network resources when away from campus.

The service is restricted to faculty associated with the Berkeley campus, including Professors (Emeritus, Full, Associate, Assistant, Clinical, and Adjunct), Lecturers, and Librarians. The Vice Chancellor's office defines these eligibility requirements. For questions on eligibility, contact User and Account Services at accounts@socrates.berkeley.edu.

This service accesses the same high-speed modems as the ones used for the Internet Access SHIPS- Subscription Home IP Service. The only difference is that faculty do not have to pay. The current modem pool consists of 384 56K modems, and there is an 8-hour time limit. The dialup access phone# is 510-848-1107. The old faculty modem service phone# still works also. (510-643-2327).

Each faculty member must have a password-protected Home IP account. To sign up, see the Berkeley Internet Link page. There is no further sign-up necessary. If a faculty member's payroll title code is in the 'faculty' range, then he/she should be able to connect.

This service provides SLIP, PPP, telnet and rlogin access. Please note that it is not necessary to use the Home IP software (or the Berkeley Internet Kit) to use this service, nor even to have a computer to use (a terminal and modem using telnet will work as well).

For help

Software to help set up and use the Faculty Modem service is provided by Workstation Software Support Group (WSSG, 264 Evans Hall, 642-8899). WSSG has developed help pages; see http://depot.berkeley.edu/docs/remote/faculty.html. WSSG consultants answer e-mail addressed to drmicro@socrates.berkeley.edu.
